The MSU on the Move program has already taken off in 2013! Health screenings started this week to check height, weight, BMI, blood pressure, waist circumference, cholesterol, and blood sugar. Be sure to check the health screening page for additional screening sites and locations in the coming weeks. The results you get at the screenings will be helpful in establishing individualized resolutions, or will be helpful in checking to see if the resolutions you have set are in line with your health needs. Go here to learn more about all the great perks and freebies you gain by just participating in the health screenings!
Once you know what areas of your health you are striving to maintain or improve, utilize the resources we have on the MSU on the Move website. You will find a variety of healthy resources that offer tips, guidelines, and tools to help you make healthier choices. Check the schedule for Q and A sessions and cooking demonstrations to attend. The Q and A sessions are an opportunity for you to bring your fitness and nutrition questions to professionals for their answers, and to also gain insight your peers might have to offer. The cooking demonstrations will provide handouts, recipes, and food samples to you while you see how a healthy recipe is made, look at the ingredients and simple equipment used, and ask any questions you might have about healthy food preparation.
If you are ready to start making healthy food choices right now, but have no idea where to start, I suggest you choose one food group or nutrient to highlight and fit into your normal eating routine. Here is an excellent handout that gives simple ideas for using canned beans. They are convenient, inexpensive and full of protein, fiber and other nutrients. While canned foods have the potential to be high in sodium, look for lower sodium options.
Regardless of your resolution, set simple health goals now that you can easily start and stick with. This will increase your chances of reaching your health goals!
